GENERAL POPULATION CORP.

About.

ABOUT GEN POP

General Population Corp. is an independent media company headquartered in St. John's, Newfoundland, the easternmost point of North America and, we would argue, the most important.

We cover politics, culture, and the stories that actually matter to actual people. No filter. No PR department. No pretense. Just the work.

We are for the real ones. For the culture.

OUR MISSION

To inform, provoke, and occasionally infuriate. We believe independent media is not a hobby, it is a necessity. We believe Newfoundland deserves a publication that takes it seriously.

We are building something here. We hope you'll be part of it.

THE TEAM

WILLIAM WILLIAMS — EDITOR-IN-CHIEF & FOUNDER

William is an acclaimed filmmaker and former political figure who has never quite been able to stay out of the room where things happen. He ran for office, contested the results, and has been very clear about his feelings on the matter — more on that, always, at a later date.

He had a brief but, by his own account, seismic run in broadcasting before being cancelled by what he refers to exclusively as "the woke mob." The industry's loss was independent media's gain.

William legally changed his name, goes to the gym with a frequency that makes attendance at public events logistically complicated, and founded General Population Corp. after growing frustrated with media organizations that prioritized access over accuracy, comfort over courage, and engagement metrics over actual journalism.

He has been told he is "a lot." He considers this a compliment.

William holds strong opinions about justice, truth, and which St. John's restaurant has the best fish and chips. He is always right. He lives in St. John's with his convictions and a truly unreasonable number of notebooks.

(WITHHELD BY REQUEST) — SENIOR MANAGING EDITOR

This person has spent fifteen years in Atlantic Canadian media and has the thousand-yard stare to prove it.

She joined Gen Pop because it was the first outlet that asked her to do more than

cover ribbon-cutting ceremonies and municipal budget announcements — though

she will admit she covers those too, just angrier.

P.M is responsible for making sure William's best ideas make it to print and

his worst ideas don't. This is a full-time job.

(WITHHELD BY REQUEST) — HEAD OF DIGITAL & OPERATIONS

This person is the reason the website works, the newsletter goes out on time, and the invoice

gets paid before the third reminder.  He came to Gen Pop from a career in tech

that he describes only as "fine."

He has strong opinions about serif fonts, load times, and the Oxford comma.

He does not have strong opinions about anything else, publicly, as a matter of policy.

STEPHEN OLIVER OATES— JANITOR

Stephen cleans up the messes.

THE WORK CULTURE

We are a small, fast, independent team. We do not have a ping-pong table. We do not have a cold brew on tap. We do not have a Director of Vibes.

We do have a shared commitment to the work, a group chat that is occasionally too active, and a very good coffee machine that (Name Withheld) bought and (Name Withheld) takes full credit for.

We are always looking for contributors, collaborators, and people who have a story that needs to be told. If that's you, get in touch.
